South Dakota, located in the Midwest, borders North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana. Named after the Lakota and Dakota Sioux tribes, it’s the 17th-largest state but ranks fifth in terms of low population density. Known as “The Mount Rushmore State,” its capital is Pierre, with Sioux Falls being the largest city. Major cities include Rapid City, Aberdeen, and Brookings. The eastern half is fertile and supports diverse agriculture, while the western half focuses on ranching, tourism, and defense.

The service industry is the largest economic contributor, including retail, finance, and healthcare, with Ellsworth Air Force Base being a key employer. Agriculture remains vital, especially in rural areas, producing cattle, corn, soybeans, wheat, and hogs. The state is a significant producer of ethanol and relies on tourism, particularly in the Black Hills, with attractions like Mount Rushmore and Badlands National Park.

Geographically, the Missouri River splits the state, forming regions known as East River and West River. There are many natural lakes and reservoirs, with notable parks and recreational areas offering activities like hunting, fishing, and hiking. Popular events include the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, drawing large crowds each year.
